Why taste olive oil on Leros

Leros, a quiet island in the Dodecanese of the southeastern Aegean, has pressed olive oil for generations. Its sun-drenched hillsides, dry summers, and sea breezes give Lerian extra virgin olive oil its bright, peppery character — the same liquid gold that has anchored the Mediterranean diet for millennia. Tasting olive oil here, at Casa Aloni in Agia Marina, means meeting it where it is grown and pressed. You taste not only the oil but the place: the groves, the harvest, and the island traditions that surround it. It is one of the most authentic things to do on Leros for travelers who want to understand Greek food culture from the source.
